Katie Hornberger, Modern Instructor

Katie Michaelis Hornberger is a classically trained Ballerina who also enjoys Modern, some Jazz and is always down for a good dance in the rain. Katie began her training at age 3 with Children’s Ballet Theatre in Salt Lake City, where she danced with her class in story ballets each year and grew under the tutelage of Julie Orlob and Stacey Richins. Katie has enjoyed masterclasses from STEPS on Broadway, Maria Calegari & Bart Cook, & others. During her time at CBT Katie also had a chance to have a firsthand view of and help with the backstage management of several shows in Kingsbury Hall and Rose Wagner Theater.

When she was 14, Katie moved north to Garland Utah and a year later began dancing with Michelle Jackman at Classical Youth Ballet. Here Katie continued her study of Ballet, and through an opportunity to serve as a TA discovered a love and gift for teaching dance to young children. She continued as a summer program teacher at CYB while attending BYU-Idaho.

While at BYU-Idaho, Katie continued studying Ballet and learned Modern under Patricia Dienhart, Elizabeth McChesney and Joy Esplin; and Gary Larsen guided her exploration of tap and clogging. Katie also pursued education in Child Development and Technical Theater, combining these passions into an Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree focused on dance production management.

When she is not dancing, Katie enjoys gardening, canning, and harvesting on her parents farm; crocheting, anything with live music, and helping to plan and host family and community gatherings. Katie’s current and favorite life calling is being a wife and mother to an incredible, adventure loving man and their two children. They can often be found singing, hiking, climbing on rocks and boulders, and making pancakes and cookies in the kitchen.

Dance is like singing with your feet, painting with your body, and sharing your soul for a moment with friend as you work together to create art that you can feel, see, and hear all at once. Dancing is like dreaming, but better.

The best team is one who works together and plays together until the work is so enjoyable that it is play too.
